Brokerage Comparison
Best Brokerage for Beginners — The 2025 Comparison
The short answer is Fidelity. Here's why — and when the others are worth considering.
The Speedrun Take
Fidelity has FZROX and FZILX — the only 0.00% expense ratio funds that exist. No account minimum. No fees. Great research tools. The only downside: if you want to fund them, you may need to wait for the transfer to settle. For 99% of beginners, Fidelity is the answer.

Why Fidelity Wins for Beginners
Four concrete reasons — not just vibes.
FZROX at 0.00% Expense Ratio
On $100,000 invested, you save $150–300/year vs the Vanguard equivalent. Over 30 years at 8% growth, those saved fees compound to $45,000+. FZROX and FZILX are the only 0.00% ER funds that exist — they are literally the cheapest funds on the planet.
Fidelity Cash Management Account
Use it as a full checking account. Debit card, ATM fee reimbursements, FDIC-insured. Your investments and your daily spending account live under one login — one less app to manage.
Fractional Shares from $1
Start investing immediately with whatever you have. You don't need $500 to buy a share of anything. $5 buys you a piece of FZROX the day your transfer clears.
Best Research at No Cost
Morningstar reports, analyst ratings, fund screeners — all free, no premium tier required. On most other platforms you pay extra for what Fidelity includes by default.
Fidelity
No account minimum, no fees, and FZROX at 0.00% expense ratio — the cheapest total market fund that exists.
When Robinhood Makes Sense (as a Complement)
Robinhood isn't the best primary brokerage — but it's not useless either.
Do: Use Robinhood for these
- Sign-up bonus: free stock worth up to $200 — free money, take it
- Gold tier: 4.5% APY on cash if you keep $1,334+ idle (Gold pays for itself)
Don't: Avoid these pitfalls
- ✗Don't make it your primary brokerage
- ✗Don't use it for index fund investing — no zero-ER funds
See /products/robinhood for the full breakdown.
When Schwab Makes Sense
Schwab's key differentiator is international ATM fee reimbursements on its brokerage debit card. If you travel internationally frequently, Schwab reimburses allATM fees worldwide — a meaningful perk over Fidelity's CMA for heavy travelers.
Otherwise, Fidelity edges Schwab on expense ratios: FZROX at 0.00% vs SWTSX at 0.03%. That gap is small but it's real. For a pure domestic investor, Fidelity wins.
Charles Schwab
Best pick for frequent international travelers — worldwide ATM fee reimbursements on the brokerage debit card.
When Vanguard Makes Sense
You already have Vanguard funds
If you have existing Vanguard accounts and don't want to consolidate, stay. Vanguard's investor-owned structure gives it a structural incentive to keep fees low forever.
VTI vs FZROX at small amounts
VTI at 0.03% ER is close enough to FZROX at 0.00% that on $10,000 the difference is $3/year. Don't switch platforms over that — but if you're starting fresh, start at Fidelity.
“But What About Thinkorswim / IBKR / Webull?”
For beginners: irrelevant.
Active trading tools don't matter if you're buying index funds and holding. Advanced charting and options flow are noise — and often a distraction that costs beginners money.
Consider advanced platforms only if:
- →You trade options regularly and need Thinkorswim's option analytics
- →You need international market access (IBKR is the best for this)
- →You want advanced charting for technical analysis
