Robinhood — Your Bonus Account, Not Your Core
Use Robinhood for the free stock bonus and Gold cash yield. Don't use it as your primary brokerage — that's what Fidelity is for.
The Speedrun Take
Robinhood is a tool, not a strategy. The free stock is free money — take it. Gold's 4.5% APY on cash beats most savings accounts. But Robinhood's fund selection is weak and the UI is designed to make you trade, not invest. Stack it on top of your Fidelity core account for the perks, and leave long-term index investing to Fidelity.

Robinhood Gold — Is It Worth It?
Gold costs $5/month ($60/year). The main benefit for most people is the 4.5% APY on uninvested cash. Here's the math:
| Cash Balance | 4.5% Annual Return | Net After $60 Fee | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5,000 | $225 | $165 | Break even |
| $10,000 | $450 | $390 | Yes |
| $25,000 | $1,125 | $1,065 | Yes |
| $50,000 | $2,250 | $2,190 | Yes |

Do Use Robinhood For…
Use it for
- Claiming your free stock sign-up bonus
- Idle cash you want earning 4.5% APY (with Gold)
- Satellite individual stock positions
- Crypto exposure (small %, high risk)
- Options trading once you understand it
Don't use it for
- Core index fund portfolio — limited fund selection
- Your Roth IRA (Fidelity has better zero-fee funds)
- Long-term buy-and-hold (gamified UI promotes over-trading)
- Large cash balances without Gold (0% interest on cash otherwise)
What About the Robinhood IRA?
Robinhood offers a 1% match on IRA contributions (3% with Gold). That sounds good, but there's a catch: the match vests after 5 years and you can't transfer to another brokerage without losing it. For most people, a Fidelity Roth IRA with FZROX is still the better long-term move.
The 3% match with Gold on a $7,000 max contribution = $210/year. That's meaningful — but only if you're committing to Robinhood long-term and comfortable with the vesting lockup.
